The Royal Marines Museum in Eastney (part of Southsea, Portsmouth) has been closed for some time now. Over the years, there have been several proposals to convert the site into a five-star hotel, with developers claiming the plans would benefit the local community. Despite this, planning permission has been repeatedly declined by the council.
It now appears the property is up for auction again — there’s an active listing on a property auction site (you may want to search for “Royal Marines Museum Portsmouth auction”) showing that bidding ends on 31st July. The building is Grade II listed, meaning it is protected due to its historical and architectural significance.
Before it was the Royal Marines Museum, the building in Eastney, Portsmouth, served as the eastney barracks, specifically the hq of the royal marine artillery. Construction of the barracks began in the 1860s, and the museum’s displays were housed in the former officers’ mess from 1972
As for exploring it — I actually got the chance to go inside last year. Surprisingly, security let us in after we asked politely, and even gave us a little tour of the main staircase and hall. Most other areas had been stripped out by then, but it was still an interesting visit.
I’ve been trying to return with my new camera ever since. Yesterday, slipping through an open window Once inside, I opened a lower-level window to let my friend in. It was a tight entry, but it worked.
I went back again today with someone else, but this time security was inside the building. I don’t think he lives there, though as he claims — the building’s condition and lack of facilities make it unfit for living. Most likely, he’s just keeping an eye on the place. he just happened to show up at the wrong moment.
Inside, there are still some rooms with boxes and leftover items, though nothing seemed particularly valuable. Still, it was a great explore — definitely worth it for the photos and the atmosphere.
