Finally got into the Royal Haslar Hospital in Gosport.
This place has been on my to do list for nearly four years, and being so local (Portsmouth) so it felt amazing to finally get inside. It’s been a long time coming, and it definitely lived up to the wait though it is very decayed.
My favourite part of the site was the spiral staircase inside the main building (as it is for many of you too.) The main building, is prettttty locked down tight. None of the windows open (they’re all on limiters), so getting in that way isn’t really an option. There’s also a security guard stationed in the gatehouse at the front entrance, and — as we found out — he’s not exactly happy with people casually strolling in.(as to be expected even though the site is semi lived in on the developed parts)
Instead, we went around the side where those three smaller buildings (admin ones judging off what was inside) near the seafront are located. From there, it’s pretty much a gamble if you will get in or not —
Development on the site seems slower than expected. I honestly thought most of it had already been turned into housing, but that’s not the case. Turns out only about a quarter is in use, and the rest is still sitting there, untouched and waiting.
What blew me away was how much has been left behind still after so many years being empty! MRI machines, old hospital lights, beds — pretty much everything you’d expect to find in a functioning hospital is still there. And after being abandoned since 2002, it’s surprising how little graffiti there is. It’s been known about for over 20 years, yet it’s still relatively intact.
There weren’t as many cameras as I expected either — they mostly seem to rely on the guy in the gatehouse for security.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the photos from this long-awaited explore even though its been reported on like absolute hell already.
