St James Hospital in Portsmouth is a captivating site for urban explorers, featuring its decaying architecture and rich history. Opened in 1879, the hospital has served various purposes, including military use during the World Wars and as a mental health facility under the NHS. The introduction of “Care in the Community” in the 1980s led to a decline in inpatient services, and by 2018, only a small area of the site was retained for mental health services. The entire site was sold to a property developer in January 2019.
In this post, I explore the hauntingly preserved features of the hospital, uncovering the mysteries surrounding its closure and transformation.
