Hippodrome House – Revitalizing Portsmouth’s Historic Site
Hippodrome House stands on the site of the original Hippodrome Theatre, a music hall that opened in 1907 and was destroyed during World War II. In 1982, the office block known as Hippodrome House was constructed on this historic location.
In 2019, plans were proposed to extend Hippodrome House by adding two extra storeys, aiming to create 13 additional flats and bring the total to 58. However, these plans were turned down in 2021.
As of 2021, the building was listed for sale with residential planning consent for 62 units, indicating potential future development.
This exploration delves into the history of Hippodrome House, its connection to Portsmouth’s cultural heritage, and the ongoing efforts to revitalize this iconic site.
